SMSF status
The portal records status for SMSF records and these will have an effect on submissions and may require employers to contact their employees to get in touch with the ATO to resolve issues.
The main compliance statuses to be aware of are:
- Compliant - No issues. Contributions can be submitted
- Non Compliant - Issues to be resolved by employee with ATO. Contributions cannot be submitted
- Regulation details removed - Issues to be resolved by employee with ATO. Contributions can be submitted
See the full ATO list of statuses here:
Note: The portal will do a nightly check of all SMSF records to get the current status. This means you might see changes to status from one submission to the next and will have to take appropriate actions, the main ones are listed below.
SMSF Status "NON COMPLIANT"
The SuperChoice portal will allow users to create a Non Compliant SMSF but you will not be able to submit contributions to them until the compliance status changes. These could be non compliant for a number of reasons, but invalid ABN is the first check to make
If you see this status for an SMSF you are trying to submit contributions for, you will need to do two things:
- Remove the record from the current contribution
- Advise the employee that they need to check the ABN and address the compliance issue with the ATO before you can resubmit to their fund
SMSF Status "REGULATION DETAILS REMOVED"
While this particular status will not prevent submission of contributions, it may become a non compliant status so you should notify the affected employee to contact the ATO to ensure records are kept up to date.
Account details cannot be used
The portal will make payments to the SMSF account detail nominated by employers in their file uploads or in employer maintenance. There are restrictions on the accounts that can be used and this will be made clear to users if they try to use them.
If you see this error you will need to do the following:
- Contact the employee to advise them the bank details cannot be used
- Remove the invalid bank details from payroll records so they aren't used again
